I tend to believe that the answer is not really simple:
1) Pls do not forget that Hollywood still runs the biggest culture export of the USA! Whether people like it or not, but all over Europe Hollywood movies showed and demonstrated the Europeans what life is about in the USA. We saw the Doris Day times, with the spectacular cars of the 50ties and 60ties and it still continues every day!
Movies transported and still transport a lot of the American life style all over the world and also "sell" the spectacular classic cars.
2) After the war Germany was rebuilt with the help of the Americans, care packages, air bridge to Berlin etc, the Americans came to a somehwat positive image and the US soldiers had American cars, again spectacular and powerful, so people were introduced to the power and the styling.
3) American power cars are still pretty cheap, be it classics or acutal ones, German motor journalists are avoiding to report about them and try keep them down, so it is a cheap bang for the buck.
4) The power of American V8s is very much fascinating, slow reving engines, power in any gear in any situation, once you try it, you are hooked.
Just my opinion...
