t is a torque-converter (aka slush box) based tranny with 6 gears and manumatic shift control. It is NOT a clutch-based SMG/F1/DSG-type tranny.
it on our 2006 and as I understand you have Drive and S. In D it is a standard 4 spd auto in S you have the option of the 6spd auto and you shift using the paddles. If you leave in S and do not do anything it will shift as a standard 4 spd auto. It will only let you shift into a certain gear if you are carrying enough speed to use that gear.
I itest drove one and was going through the gears and because I was not going fast enough it would not shift to 6th.
I can't wait till it gets here,

New six-speed Paddle Shift automatic transmission
The new electronically controlled six-speed Paddle Shift automatic transmission features clutch to clutch operation, manual control shift operation and an integrated 32-bit electronic controller. A wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio helps deliver exciting acceleration performance along with excellent fuel economy. Configured with the new six-speed automatic transmission the Corvette is capable of reaching a top speed of 300 km/h and 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 4.8 seconds.
The six forward gears have smaller ‘steps’ between them, which enhances the feeling of performance and smoothness. The smaller steps also enable a steep, 4.02:1 first gear, which provides an improved-performance launch feel when compared with the previous four-speed automatic’s 3.06:1 first gear. There are two overdrive gears: a 0.85:1 ratio in fifth gear and a 0.67:1 ratio in sixth. The final drive ratio of Corvette models equipped with the new transmission is 2.56:1.
Technological sophistication is exemplified by two electronically controlled automatic modes, Drive and Sport; plus manual Paddle Shift. The Drive mode follows a specific shift schedule of predetermined shift points, while the Sport mode enables Performance Algorithm Shifting (PAS). PAS modifies shift patterns when performance driving is recognized by the controller. The Drive mode optimizes shifts for smoothness, while the Sport mode enables firmer shifts for better performance. With the Paddle Shift mode, gear changes are made with manual control paddles located on the steering wheel.
The performance and functions of the six-speed Paddle Shift transmission with automatic modes are guided by an integrated controller. The controller is located inside the transmission, reducing complexity. A new 300 mm torque converter, new rear bell housing, new driveline support and revised-length driveshaft also support the transmission’s integration into the Corvette.
I have 1100 miles on my new 08 c6 a6 with 2.73, it shifts out of second at 80. Keep it straight and leave the nanny on or you will pay. The car has more than enough to toast a c5zo6 or a c6zo6 if they are asleep at the switch. again keep it straight prior to punching it or it will get side ways.
I usuall just leave it in drive and squeeeeze the go pedel enough to make it work, there is more than enough torque to get the job done.
I am ordering an '08 this Spring and would like to know of experiences anyone has had with the paddle shift (supposed to be improved for 2008). Also, did the optional 2.73 rear axle provide more responsiveness, or am I best to stay with the std rear end?
