I love that the internet is full of guys who are not in the industry boasting their “knowledge” about what the industry does and doesn’t know. Let’s start with the fact that no endurance racing team uses powdered metal guides in their engines. Contrary to the assertions made below there is debate as to whether bronze valve guides are more durable. For starters the running clearance used in PM guides is roughly twice the clearance that can be safely used in bronze guides. The author of the below post cites one engine dyno operator. Hardly analytical data for backing his argument. I am a guy who basis my opinion on thoroughly researched data and personal experiences and trends. I see no empirical data to support or refute the PM argument.
We have been installing bronze valve guides in cylinder heads for over thirty years. The heads don’t seem to be coming back needing replacement guides after a few thousand mile as suggested by the author of the post. The point here is that when properly setup valve guide life will be high in any application. When things are not setup properly (see the oem setup) there will be accelerated guide wear. The bronze guides are not an issue with the LS7 heads.
I hope this helps
